Description

This image was taken with my Meade 10" ACF SCT and is one of the few images that I have been able to complete due to ongoing issues with my flats. This image was processed with no flat corrections since the flats caused many more problems than they solved.

This small but bright nebula is a good object for those with a small field of view. Using a larger telescope will reveal the fine details and structure. The object responds very well with the hydrogen-alpha filter and makes a great HA-RGB image, but you need a lot of color to colorize the nebula. The nebula also responds very well to Sulfur II and Oxygen III, so this is a good one for a color narrowband image. A wider field of view will pick up the nebula around this object as well as the nearby object SH2-115.

It is located in the northern part of the constellation of Cygnus, about 1.5° west of the bright star Deneb. It is a circular H II region with an apparent size of about 15', crossed by a dark band on the west side oriented north-south. The star responsible for its excitation is thought to be BD + 45 3216, a blue double star of spectral class O8V and apparent magnitude 9.18; estimates of the distance to this star give a value of 1740 parsecs (about 5670 light-years) which would place Sh2-112 in a particularly rich region of the Orion arm and physically very close to the large nebular system of Cygnus X.
